Electric Street Car Possible in NF Downtown

The mayor says it's just being discussed, still need to meet with BIA

Niagara Falls is tossing about the idea of an electric street car running down Queen Street.

Mayor Jim Diodati tells us the idea is in it's very early stages, taking us back to a time when street cars were used a lot.

"In a lot of the downtowns, including St. Catharines, we used to have street cars that were very popular.  And now that things are going back toward the electric way, that street cars are now, and all these electric vehicles, there's this renewed interest."

The mayor adds the idea is just being discussed, to the point where cost and where it would run haven't been looked at.

He says discussion would require involvement of local businesses and the BIA.   "But it adds an element of excitement, the idea something like this can both be a mode of transportation.  It can also be a bit of an attraction, in the same way that double deck buses are something people like to get on.  Not just because it moves you around, but it can be a cool vehicle to be on."

The mayor points out another reason for discussion is because of driverless vehicles become more realistic.
