Niagara Transit's commissioner says the growth over the last 2 years is 'unheard of'
Some impressive numbers for Niagara Transit when it comes to demand for the service.
Manager Carla Stout showed the transit commission since the region's service was amalgamated in 2022, the number of people riding the bus drastically outpaced the budget set aside for transit.
She says they're working hard to meet the demand. "We're over our pre-COVID ridership, already within the 1st year. And, having a 93% increase in ridership over the span of 2-years, is practically unheard of."
She added there are security cameras on board, leading to 90% of riders surveyed feeling safe.
She also says the lower, universal fare of $3.50 starting Canada Day will help. "We thought that that would take us from serving, or providing a low income pass, to about 5,000 people annually, to potentially serving people who qualify for this category of pass in excess of 50,000 people."
She also says they'll be adding more buses to the fleet.
