City of St. Catharines Passes Capital Budget

Budget includes investments in active transportation and recreation.

St. Catharines city council has passed the 2023 capital budget.

Highlights of the budget include $4.8 million to renovate the St. Catharines Public Library's Central branch.

It also includes $6.1 million for recreation and park projects such as construction of the Merritton splashpad, replacing two playgrounds and replacing the turf at Kiwanis Field.

Meanwhile, $4.4 million has been set aside to replace the Martindale Pond weir at the Henley rowing course, ahead of the 2024 World Rowing Championship taking place in St. Catharines.

Council also tabled next year's operating budget during Monday's meeting.

The city says the proposed tax levy increase is currently just under one percent, however, that could change.
