Chicken By-Law to be Reviewed

City of Port Colborne to review, after resident made the case for chickens, after a complaint

It's an issue more municipalities are dealing with... allowing homeowners to have chickens on urban and rural residential properties.

Port Colborne is looking at revising a by-law, after a resident appealed to have a small number of chickens.

Julie Cule explained to city council that chickens provide food and nutrient rich manure, all after someone complained.  "As for the noise, I have kids in my back yard, and dogs, that are much noisier.  I played my music loud at night one time when I was having a fire, I may be louder than my chickens.  They go to bed at 7:30 now."

The city is allowing her to keep the chickens while the by-law is reviewed, that'll take roughly 3 to 4-months to do.

She says not only do chickens provide quality food, but they've also been shown to help with social isolation.

"The neighbours around me love my chickens, they're kids... I have a couple of apartments too, and they tell me they get enjoyment from watching the chickens come out in the morning.  I think most people find it endearing."
