Organizations seeking volunteers who are 55 and older.
Big Brothers Big Sisters North and West Niagara is on the hunt for volunteers.
The organization has put out a call for volunteers who are 55 and older for their Be A Mentor Campaign, which is running throughout the month of November.
We spoke with Nicole Boccia, Marketing & Communications Officer for Big Brothers Big Sisters North and West Niagara, who says the program provides benefits across generations.
"It's actually a fact that children who share a space with older adults demonstrate a higher reading ability, improved verbal and communication skills, and they also have fewer behavioral issues, so there's definitely a benefit for the big and the littles from having these interactions."
The work the volunteer will do depends on the child and the program they are in.
Some volunteers will be going into schools with their kid, and others may participate in activities such as movies and going for walks, depending on the child's interests.
Matches will be determined based on compatibility.
Anyone who wishes to participate in the program must be 55 or older, submit an inquiry form, attend an orientation and send an application.
