Biden and Trudeau Announce Updates on Norad, Migration

The President and Prime Minister have announced updates to Norad and the Safe Third Country Agreement

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Joe Biden have announced the expansion of the Safe Third Country Agreement.

In a joint statement, the leaders say the agreement will stretch across the entire land border, including waterways.

Under the agreement, asylum seekers must make their claim in the country they arrive in first.

As part of the agreement, Canada will take in 15,000 more migrants from the Western Hemisphere.

The leaders also announced they're bolstering Norad and launching a one-year energy transformation task force.

The task force will focus on renewable energy, nuclear energy, electric vehicles and critical minerals.

As part of the changes to Norad, Canada will invest $6.96 billion to modernize the surveillance system in the north, as well as $.73 billion towards aircraft, refeulling and airfield improvements prior to procuring F-35 fighter jets.

Trudeau says the money will come from planned investments.
