Regional councillors continue to hear from the public, including when at events
Speed cameras have been discussed again at Niagara region's public works committee last week.
It was first brought up by Councillor Brian Heit.
"I've been at a few functions in the last couple of weeks, and unfortunately, some people that I know have received tickets, are coming after me. They're asking why is the region ticketing and making money off these cameras that are set up."
Regional staff repeated the money is used to operate the cameras, but also road safety investment.
A number of other councillors added this topic frequently comes up.
Councillor Bob Gale said he would never have voted for them if he felt there weren't enough warning signs. Regional staff say they are looking at making signs more visible and easier to read.
Councillor Haley Bateman told of someone who wasn't happy about getting a ticket for doing 60 in a 40 zone. "People are driving so fast, they're using their cell phones when driving, they're distracted. We're a tourist area, so they're looking for stuff, they're not even paying attention to the road. We have to do better. It is such an important program, as a parent of young kids."
Councillor Tom Insinna suggested they ask Niagara Regional police to speak before them, and talk about ideas they have to improve traffic safety.
