Apartments Planned for White Oaks Resort

Niagara-on-the-Lake Lord Mayor says there's been some opposition, concerning height, but council has weighed it against town policies

Four apartment buildings, housing about 800 units, are to be built on the White Oaks Resort property.

Niagara-on-the-Lake Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa tells us some nearby residents have expressed concern about the height of the buildings.

He says the original plan was to allow 16 and 20 floors.  "One of the buildings that has been approved, with a holding zone on it, is a 25 floor building, so obviously that's a little higher.  But they're going to cascade downwards, so the buildings will be a different height, and cascade away from the escarpment."

He adds the town and district have a plan that calls for more growth in that area.

"This development site is not immediately adjacent to the residential community, which is single family homes, because that's Niagara College which is across the way.  So, council felt comfortable that it was a good compromise."

Council and staff also measured the development against its own policies, the Official plan, and provincial guidelines.
