Announcement on Mandatory Vaccines for Hospital Workers Expected This Week

Media report suggests province's top doc will also announce we are staying in Stage 3

The Toronto Star, in an exclusive report, says the Ford government will make vaccines mandatory for hospital and long term care workers during a Tuesday announcement.

Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr, Kieran Moore is expected to issue the vaccine mandate directive for doctors, nurses and anyone "patient facing" who works in long term care homes, hospitals and in home care.

A senior government official tells the Star those who refuse will get tested twice a week for COVID-19 and may be moved to other duties where they don't directly deal with patients.

Sources say the province will also continue with Stage 3 restrictions on indoor and outdoor gatherings.

This comes as the number of COVID cases in the province continues to climb.

Yesterday there were 578 new cases across Ontario, the highest daily total since early June.

Health officials say 408 of the infections were in unvaccinated people and 59 in those who were partially vaccinated,

Moore is also expected to announce the province will administer COVID booster shots for vulnerable elderly people and those who are immunocompromised.
