AFN Elects First Female Chief

RoseAnne Archibald of Ontario makes history

Yesterday Archibald became the first woman elected as national chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

She secured the victory when her main rival, Reginald Bellerose of Saskatchewan, conceded after a second day of virtual voting.

Archibald telling supporters "Today is a victory, and you can tell all the women in your life that the glass ceiling has been broken."

The only glitch was when her cellphone became flooded with text messages congratulating her own the historic win, delaying the Oath of Office.

Archibald succeeds Perry Bellegarde.
