51 Arrests Made in Shoplifting Crackdown

NRP responding to community concern about violent shoplifting, started operation in September

Violent shoplifting targeted by Niagara Regional police has led to a significant number of arrests.

The force says it's heard a lot of community concern about the theft of lots of money, as well as the use of weapons in retail thefts.

It established the Past the Point of Purchase Shoplifting Initiative, and since September, police focused nine times at different stores.

They say 51 people have been arrested, and 48 charges laid.

Police found $14,600 in merchandise was stolen, of which they recovered over $7,000 and returned it to the stores to be sold.

Police also found weapons, laid drug charges, and arrested people on outstanding warrants.
