20-Year Old Project Taking Shape: Zalepa

Contruction of the Village in Niagara on the Lake, including hotel, expected to finish next year

Excitement is developing in Niagara on the Lake as construction of a Hyatt hotel, Foodland grocery store, office and retail area, and public square takes shape in the Village.

Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa tells us the developer, John Hawley, plans to have this done early next year.

He adds the focus is having local businesses invest.  "This is not going to be big box store space, that kind of space is not here.  It's more like our Queen Street, where we have the locally owned and operated shops.  Now, sometimes those are national affiliates."

He says the design of the Village is to make it more pedestrian friendly and give it an urban feel.

He also says it'll be the Clayfield hotel, honouring the area.  "That clayfield gives it that connection with the area, being that the Niagara farmlands are known for their special clay type soil, which the grapes really like."
